Well Hello 2010… | San Antonio Newborn Photographer

Oh my goodness. One blog post a month? One could say I have disappeared from internet-land! Indeed, I have less time on my trusty computer but this is actually one of my new year’s commitments. Less time goofing around online. Seems like every time I sit down I wind up at my desk for an hour and well, who has that kind of time!?! As my daughter is growing she is sleeping less & less & getting more mobile, thus we girls are spending a lot of time exploring the world together. Even a meowing kitty brings big, wide eyes and well, that’s what being a mom is all about. Not missing the little things. So…that being said a little update on business…

I was planning to return to work after the new year but it looks like this summer is as early as I will be back to business. I am taking a few selective newborn shoots before then, so please contact me if you are going to be delivering soon! My passion is working with the itty-bitties! For now, I am a mom first, and a photographer second. It’s what feels right. :D Can you tell?

[My friend Danielle shot a few candids of me & my sweet caroline in exchange for some head shots for her photography website. She let me get my hands on the editing and I am just thrilled. This image couldn't be any more "us"]

Here are the other two Christmas cards my girlie landed on this year. I shot both images & created both cards. Mine is the hot pink one (of course!) and the red card is my inlaws card. Such a lucky girl!

Now, I promise you, my next post will include the nursery pictures…finally!! ;)

Rachael - Love the update! CAN'T WAIT to see those nursery pics!

Irma - Oh beautiful shots of you and your sweet Caroline...love love her expression on pic #2 "JOY" how precious!!! grrrr...

I am working on several Christmas cards this season and I just finished my parents card…using my favorite picture so far! I haven’t yet shot my own Christmas card (as we are working on our pose daily-practice makes perfect!) but I will get that up when I can! I also have grand plans of a video tour of the nursery, now that it is complete. My social calendar seems to be keeping me busy & I am squeezing in projects as time allows! :D

Rachael - I love it! She is PRECIOUS! :)

Tori - I love it! and, I love her! She seems to be sitting up taller?? Is she? Can you read the onesie yet or is this it and still unreadable?

Maricel - love it! and love the christmas card! :)

Wow. It has been a long time, dear sweet blog! I have been busy. I do have an excuse. See this little bundle of joy? She is eating all of my time. And I love every second of it. But don’t for a second think that I am letting my photography skills slip! Oh noooo I am not! in fact, I am perfecting them. I have a very captive little subject that looks nothing like this tiny newborn pictured here. I have a smiley, squealy, bubble blowing, jibbery jabbery little girl on my hands and boy, are we having fun! I am shooting like mad! And decorating. Oh the decorating. I will share just as soon as her custom mats get cut for the framed photos on the wall & the pictures get printed. I think photographers might be the worst about printing their own pictures. I am trying not to fall into this rut, but EVERY SINGLE DAY I take the CUTEST PICTURE EVER. SO how will I ever choose what gets displayed?!? I am in the process. Her room is finished (and FABULOUS!!), with the exception of some empty frames. I will get it up soon! In the meantime, I am designing three christmas cards and shooting miss caroline for our christmas card. In all my free time. ;)

For now, here is some girly goodness. These are the birth announcements for my sweet caroline. Little fun fact: That damask pattern that you see is a brush that I made in photoshop, and is the exact pattern that covers two of the walls in her room!

Meghan - Thanks! ;o) She really is absolutely gorgeous!

Sabrina - Oh my! Adorable!

Renee Booe - Love that hat she is wearing. Such a beautiful picture and a precious little one. Congrats!

Karen - So glad you're back. I've missed your posts. What a cutie!

i love the belly! >>San Antonio Newborn Photographer

I love my baby’s belly. She is growing every day, and while there is something sad about her not being so tiny, there is great joy in knowing she is thriving. She gave me her very first social smile today and as if she couldn’t make me feel any more complete, she finally gave me the one thing that put me over the edge. I am simply in love with being a mommy!

This is a new photography prop called the egg cocoon that I was testing out for the talented Nina of Dragonfly Creations!

san-antonio-newborn-photographer0

meghan - That really is one adorbale belly! Kale's new favorite game is when I poke his belly button while I'm changing his diaper - he cracks up and it's so funny!

Tess - Aww - SOOO sweet. Those moments are truly the best. The time does fly - it is amazing how they are so tiny one moment and big the next.

amy - absolutely ADORABLE!! Love the cocoon too...I might have to get one!

I am alive!! Promise!

caroline-in-the-slingOh my heavens, newborns are time consuming!!

I am here, I am functioning & I am shooting away! HOWEVER, I haven’t processed hardly anything to share yet! The way I see it, is that I MUST enjoy my baby girl while she is this tiny because I will have plenty of time to process pictures later. Then, I can adore her tiny feet all over again!

Her nursery is coming along…slooooowly but surely. The stencil finally arrived today. My dad painted all the walls while he was here; he is a PRO at painting-it looks phenomenal. I ended up painting with Ralph Lauren’s Mt. Ranier. And, twist her arm, my mom will be making another trip out to help with the stenciling of the pink damask pattern.

I was able to score some beautiful pink & white linen Pottery Barn curtains (at a steal of a price & in perfect condition!) on ebay to help complete the room. Yesterday I spent her afternoon nap “customizing” them…because…well, that’s what I do. :D Only the best for my girl! Hopefully I can add the blackout liner today.

I also decided that her bumper needs bigger hot pink bows, so in the next couple of days, I will be replacing all the little ties with bigger ones. A girl simply cannot have enough pink, bows or polka dots in her bedroom. Oh no she can’t!!

Okay, I hear a little one squeaking in the other room & she beats the computer when it comes to getting my attention. I promise, I will be back with more images soon, but being a mommy absolutely comes first right now. I am certain you all will understand!

Oh, and because every post is better with a picture, this is how we are functioning! I happened to stumble upon this Peanut Shell sling at marshalls for cheap, cheap & later learned it was quite a steal! (I am the ultimate bargain shopper!!) However, I swear by the Moby wrap. It is magic! Not that Miss Caroline is a crier, because really, she hardly cries at all, squeaks mostly, but this thing is so soothing to her! I highly recommend it!

Tess - Good to hear from you!! I love the picture, and you look amazing. I loved the sleepy wrap (very much like the moby) and carried Micah in it for the first few months. Hang in there - it does get easier.

Karen - I just love that picture of you two. Shawna, you are soooo creative.

Diane - Shawna, I absolutely love this picture. Sam and I cannot wait to see you and meet Miss Caroline. Diane

Sabrina - You look great Shawna!!!! She is adorable. That's such a cute picture that you are probably going to love forever! These baby moments are the best aren't they? Can't wait to see her cute room. Do you need help with anything? I'm pretty handy with a sewing machine and just got done painting our house. Let me know.

Introducing… >> San Antonio Newborn Photographer

Much to our surprise, we welcomed a sweet baby girl into the world on August 8th!  It was a rough delivery & I am still recovering but of course, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to photograph my precious bundle of joy. Here is a sneak peek…the first of MANY images. We are so in love…

I have been working with the lovely Nina of Dragonfly Creations and in exchange for photos to use in her etsy shop, she is sending me some fun props. This is one of her baby cocoons. You can find more of her goodies here!

Karen - Oh Shawna, she is so precious. I've been anxiously awaiting a blog post to catch a glimpse of her. Thank you for sharing with us.

Tess - She is GORGEOUS! BTW - great birthday - it is also my Dad's!

Erinn - I've been waiting for one of your "professional" photos of your lovely little lady.

Lauren Salinas - What a sweet little girl. She looks so peaceful. I love the picture.

Jana Perenchio - Congrats to you both, Shawna....she's totally precious! What a fun sweet deal w/Nina too, that's terrific!! Can't wait to see more pics (hint hint).

Sabrina - Oh my heck Shawna!! She is beautiful and I LOVE that picture. Congratulations!! How are you feeling? She is so stinking cute! I love her.

rosemary cannon - Caroline is an absolute doll! This photo should be sent in to a photo contest. My first time on your website and can't wait to see more pictures!

Just in case…

I have focused most of my attention on creating a fun & bright boys room but must also plan for a little girl…just in case. I realize my intuition could be TOTALLY wrong and I might end up with a daughter, so she should have a nursery that is no less fun than a little boy’s! So here is my storyboard if it is a girl. You can see the actual room & furniture here. The only piece of furniture you still can’t see is a tall armoire that has two glass doors on top & will be lined with coordinating fabric. There will be a lot of tweaking along the way, but for now, this is the basic plan:

girl-nursery-storyboardjpg

Now on my screen (even though my color profile is embedded, ergh!), the colors show up very different than in real life. It is NOT hot pink, it is a deeper magenta color. But you get the idea. Below is closer to the right colors & I am working on a fix. I am beyond frustrated!! I need to see the walls before I make too many more decisions. I am not sure if the curtains would be black or white, but either way, I would make them myself (now that I have taught myself to sew-yeah!) & accent them with pink in some capacity. I am leaning towards tying them with bows at the top. I had originally planned on pulling in an apple green too, so we’ll see how that looks once everything is put together. I will make some throw pillows for the chair. I will not use the bumpers until after the first year, but they were way too good of a deal to pass up! I am also not yet sure what I will put in the frames that will hang above the dresser. The little girl’s name we have picked out is as many letters as there are openings, so I might do something fun with that. I also still want to do a fabric covered tiled pinboard wall behind the door for art & special cards, so I will use some of the fabric for that too.

I have been going back & forth on the wall stenciling and it wasn’t until this morning that I got some clarity. I like this stencil the best and with modern technology (awesome!) I was able to make a brush in photoshop to simulate exactly what a few different wall patterns would look like without having to do this in real life. Here were my mockups (and I would LOVE feedback!!!):

The two walls stenciled will be the two that intersect behind the crib. This was the original plan (much thanks to my genius designy friend Lauren, who suggested adding grey to the opposing walls!). I thought it might be a good idea to add the grey into the damask pattern but…something wasn’t right. I don’t love how this looks. I wanted really high contrast, and this just wasn’t doing it for me.

damask-mock-up-full_crop

So I messed with doing mostly black damask, and adding in a few random pink medallions for color. It felt kind of rock n’ rollish to me. I am not a rock n’ roll kind of gal, so I kept trying different patterns. I cannot tell you how thankful I am that I can do this on photoshop & don’t have to do it in person!

damask-mock_up-full3_sporadic-pink

And after playing around a bunch, my very favorite design ended up being the one I had never thought of. I really prefer all magenta. [i think] Since all my furniture is black & white, and a main accent fabric in the room is black with white polka dots, this just felt right. What do you think?

damask-mock-up-full4_pink-only_crop

Melanie Verlatti - Love the magenta damask the best Shawna! Excellent taste :)

Meghan - I have to agree, I love the all magenta also. I'm hoping you have a girl just so I can see this in person once it's all done. I just love girls rooms regardless (BTW... STILL struggling with poor Haley's room). Thought I was going to go one way, but now am thinking I'm giving up till she get's her "big girl" bed in Jan. I have NO idea what to do there, but it's going to have to last her till 5 for sure, possibly 8-12 years. UGH!!

Julie - I guess your "just in case" has become a reality....cant wait to see the beautiful room..actually cant wait to see the beautiful baby in her room!

Holly - I am friends with Julie T. and sometimes check out your awesome blog. I am having a surprise baby so I have my girl stuff and boy stuff all planned out. I was going to do the same bright pink damask and thought you may be interested in this bedding at Target just in case you haven't seen it. http://www.target.com/Bananafish-Lily-Bedding-Collection/dp/B001MVM24S?ie=UTF8&frombrowse=1&node=45843011&sessionID=190-2268480-3174032

-shawna- - thanks, Holly! That is super cute bedding...and I guess we WILL get to see...I had a baby girl & the room is under construction right now!

Shannon - I LOVE the hot pink damask pattern on the site. Is there a place where I can buy that exact fabric? I want to make a cover for a child's chair in my little girl's nursery and this exact patter matches her walls and bedding. Thanks so much! Shannon

-shawna- - sorry shannon-I have no idea! It is a stencil that covers my girl's walls!

passing the time…

I feel like it is Christmas Eve. I have the biggest surprise/gift/blessing of my life coming right around the corner and I am so full of nervous excitement that I don’t know what to do with myself. As I was driving home from Target today it just hit me like a ton of bricks…the tears started flowin’ and I wanted to start jumping up & down. (Don’t worry, I didn’t) My life is going to change FOREVER this week. Like FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE THINGS WILL NEVER BE THE SAME. And I am so beyond blissful & emotional that I cannot handle myself. I blame the hormones.

So, since I have cleaned, dusted, disinfected and vacuumed my house every single day for the last 5 days in nervous anticipation, I decided I needed to get a little more creative at passing the time. Oh, my husband is going to be happy about this one(riiiiight)…only because it involves the AMEX and, well, he isn’t much too thrilled about anything involving the AMEX. Just because I am a pro at using it. :D

I am so inspired by the talent on Etsy & I try to support is as often as I can. I adore handmade & one-of-a-kind items and so I have set out on the hunt for the perfect baby mobile…just to pass the time. I realized I haven’t provided my final little girl’s room plan (mostly because I don’t think I am having a girl) but if I have the time tomorrow, I will post that too. For now, mobiles…

Here is my current little boy fave made by Gifts Define (find it HERE):

mobile-1

I also thought of getting finger puppets, stuffing & sewing them closed & making my own using these by DaisyDaydreams (find them HERE):

mobile2

or these by Cheryl Smith (find them HERE):

mobile-3

If it is a girl, I would pick a mixture of the black, white, grey, green & pink animals from (above & below) again by Cheryl Smith (find them HERE) and make my own frame, complete with (of course) some very girly elements like magenta buttons & bows:

Okay, so that passed about an hour…guess I better start getting more creative, huh?!?

Lauren Salinas - so cute Shawna...I love you're style. I can't wait to meet your new little one. He/She is one lucky kid to have such a special momma.

Meghan - SUPER CUTE! Can't wait to see the whole finished room! Oh, and watch out for buttons, my kids have both pulled down their mobiles and buttons, unless enormous, could pose quite the choking hazard.

Rachael - Those mobile ideas are adorable! Can't wait to "meet" this little BOY! :)

Irma - Wishing you best wishes...thanks for the mention ^__^

occupation: storyteller • San Antonio Photographer

Life is about stories. The stories we share with our friends, the stories we create with our families, the stories that are passed on from generation to generation that keep the memories alive. How fortunate am I that my job is to tell stories through imagery? Pretty lucky, I’d say!

Recently I had the opportunity to create my very first album, composed of the story of a beautiful new family of three. They wanted to include maternity & newborn images as a keepsake for their family. I really enjoyed putting this together & arranging the images in a way that told their story. They joy they felt during this exciting time bounces off the pages. Here’s a peek of what one of my Luxury Albums looks like (and please know that there are a gazillion ways to customize it!):

Kim - Just beautiful! I bet they are so happy with this! I would be.

-shawna- - thank you both! :)
